Kappa Erachi (Tapioca with Beef)

Kappa Erachi is a wonderful dish from Kerala.
Kappa Erachi is different from Kappa Biriyani. Kappa Biriyani doesn’t have coconut and is merely a mixture of Seasoned Tapioca and Beef. But kappa Erachi is cooked Tapioca and beef are simmered in a paste of fried coconut and spices, which makes this dish heavenly.

Ingredients

Tapioca (Peeled and Cubed ) – 1 1/2 kg
Beef Cubed  – 1/2 kg
Salt – to taste

For Marinating Beef:

Shallots (Kunjulli) – 8
 Garlic – 5 or 6 cloves
Ginger – 2 tbsp
Slit Green Chillies – 2
Garam Masala Powder – 1 tbsp
Meat Masala Powder – 2 tbsp (any Meat Masala Powder)
Red Chilly Powder – 2 tsp
Turmeric Powder – 1 /2 tsp
Pepper Powder – 1 tsp
Curry Leaves – A sprig
Vinegar –  1 tsp (optional)
Salt – to taste

For Boiling Tapioca
         Salt – to taste
         Turmeric – A pinch
         Water- As needed

For Dry Roasting and Grinding
 Ingredients:
        Grated Coconut – 1 cup
            Coriander Powder – 2 tbsp
            Chilly Powder – 1 tsp
            Garam Masala Powder – 1 tsp
            Shallots (Kunjulli) – 6
            Curry Leaves – A sprig
             Garlic – 3 or 4 cloves
             Fennel seed_ 1/2 tsp
Method:
Heat a non stick pan and dry roast grated coconut, shallots, garlic ,fennel seed and curry leaves until the coconut turns to a nice brown color.
Reduce heat and add coriander powder,turmeric pd, chilly powder and garam masala powder. Fry for 2 minutes.Grind all the dry roasted items with very little water to form a thick paste.

Kappa Erachi Preparation Method

Wash the beef thoroughly and drain all water.
Marinate the beef with all the above ingredients and keep it aside for 30 minutes.
Meanwhile, boil the tapioca pieces along with salt and a pinch of turmeric until tender. Be careful not to overcook the tapioca.
Drain the water and keep the tapioca pieces aside.
Pressure cook the marinated beef. No need of water since beef will let out water. The cooking time varies depending on the beef used. So pressure cook accordingly .

Open the pressure cooker and transfer the Cooked Beef with gravy to a big pan.
Add the cooked tapioca pieces to the same pan, followed by ground coconut paste. Mix everything lightly. Add more salt if needed.
Cover and cook on medium low heat for 10 minutes stirring occasionally.
After ten minutes, remove lid and mix everything thoroughly. Be careful not to fully mash all the pieces. The dish should have some chunks of tapioca and beef.

You can have Kappayerachi as an entire Meal or as a Side Dish or as an evening Snack.
