Avalose Podi


Avalose Podi ( അവലോസ് പൊടി )

Avalose podi (powder) is a traditional kerala tea time snack…It is a tasty and healthy evening snack or ‘nalumani palaharam’ with a cup of hot tea.Try this tasty snack in your kitchen and enjoy the delicious taste.

Raw rice (Pachari) - 500 gm
Grated coconut - 3 cups
Cumin seeds - 2 tsp
Salt to taste
Sesame seeds - 2 tsp
Sugar - 5 tsp( optional)

Method

Step 1: Soak the rice for 5 hour. Drain it and make fine powder using a mixer grinder.

Step 2 : Mix rice powder, grated coconut, cumin seeds, sesame seeds and salt by hand. If you don’t like lumps in your Avalose Podi combine well using your hands and set it aside for 2 hour.

Step 3 : Heat a heavy bottom pan or uruli and add rice powder mixture. Dry roast the mixture on a medium low flame for about half an hour till the mixture becomes dry and turns light brown in colour. Constant stirring throughout the process is very important.

Step 4 : If need remove from flame and add sugar. Mix well.

Step 5: Tasty avalose podi is ready. Avalose podi can be stored for almost a year if it properly is stored.

Note:
Usually ‘avalose podi’ is eaten with little sugar and a banana. When this avalose podi is mixed with jaggery syrup and shaped into small balls, then it becomes ‘avalose unda’.
